The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is an organization that aimed to help African Americans gain equal rights through legislation. They were known for helping to enforce and get laws passed that dealt with civil rights. During the civil rights movement's peak in the 60's, Kivie Kaplan was it's leader and president.
The NAACP was one of the main organizers behind the bus boycott in Montgomery and actually had rosa parks as their secretary in the local chapter there. The NAACP also was leading the campaign to get the little rock nine into the public schools.
Black panther Party
The black panthers were a complete 180 from the standard civil rights movement groups. It was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in 1966, in oakland. The original views of the part were very socialistic and Marxist with a very nationalist pride for African Americans living in the states. The group was the target for the FBI, involving allot of efforts to counteract the party's growth, which had peaked at roughly 10,000 in 1969. Then, numerous incidents involving illegal activities had caused their support to erode from under them. They were also very violent in methods for dealing with racial issues.
The legacy of the black panther party is not one of triumph and success. The party is infact one of blood stained and tarnished reputation by their own doings. Had the original intentions of the party come to actual acts, there would have been a massive amount of blood spilled. Instead, the black panthers created African american pride, which there had been none before. They gave blacks a cultural identity and helped link them back to their roots in Africa.
